Open letter to my wife, or why I still need to talk about Spineless but probably not at home anymore

Nicole:

As you may know, since I have been talking about them nonstop, much to your growing annoyance, Matt‘s recent discovery from the Spineless archives is amazing. A live, distorted blown out spectacle of sound and I haven’t listen to much of anything else since it arrived. Hearing “Asgard Scimitar” for the first time in 10+ years is like reconnecting with a lover who looks better than ever and whose personal riches will allow you to quit your day job. Sadly, “Primer” is still two minutes too long.

I’ll say this to you for the 100,000 time: they should have been one of the biggest math-y bands, but never had the chance. God bless this memory from the archives. I think we should listen to it in the car more. [Bard College archive link]

Get Well Soon, Davey Pierce [Of Montreal played The Fox]

Davey Pierce's broken wrist
Something seemed odd when Of Montreal took the stage: Davey Pierce wasn’t playing the bass, his arm was in a cast…and he was playing a keyboard. Man, I can’t tell you how much I was I was hoping for a repeat of the night Davey rocked my world and played some of the best bass I have ever seen. Kevin explains how he broke his wrist “a fortnight” ago and they had to bring in the esteemed Heather McIntosh and some other dude. Life is full of such adjustments.

Fox Theater Tip: never get balcony tickets for a show you suspect might be high energy: it’s like watching a television show about the concert you are seeing.

Confessor: Behind the Kit

Steve Shelton, Confessor’s beloved drum machine, shows what it’s like behind the kit. I wish this series existed for every drummer I love. (I’m looking at YOU, Fragile-era Bill Bruford.)

Music: 2008

The end of 2008 saw me a bit heavier than usual (shirts curving at the buttons), happy to still have a job, but still wondering what the next era in my life will be. "Where do I see myself in five years?"

Top Tracks

However, amongst all those inner, personal conflicts, I don’t have to worry about remembering what music I’ve listened to thanks to last.fm (since 2004). It’s no surprise that The National were in the one and two spots…"Blank Slate" was the best song of the year, even if it may have come out in 2007. (I thought Ida Maria’s "Oh My God" would have shown up in my year end charts, since it was probably the second best song.) In an odd twist of NPR becoming tastemaker, All Songs Considered turned me on to the third and fourth most listened to songs, the reedy Chris Bathgate and the chaoticly soothing We Versus The Shark. The National’s "Secret Meeting" probably hasn’t moved from my most listened to songs since 2006, and it stands in good company: Jawbreaker did just write the dumbest song that was a sing-a-long, Of Montreal’s Hissing Fauna… has the best bass lines from the last few years, and Breadwinner wrote them short and complicated, which is all I can handle sometimes. Scott started a Mission of Burma renaissance when he bought me their reissues for my birthday; Cut Copy reveals the fingerprint of my wife’s influence and is really the only modern-ish song on this chart; I will always love the streamlined-era Modest Mouse, as long as I don’t have to see them live ever again.
