End of life: iPhone Edition

Old iPhone

So long, old friend. We had some good calls and some bad calls.

Now I have a compass in my phone.

Sad news about the Rotring 600 series

Maybe you are one of those people that like to have a little cup on your desk filled with constantly dried out fountain pens? I know I am. And in my quest to keep that cup filled, I wanted to get myself a “year end” bonus in the form of a lava-colored Rotring 600: the king of hexagon-shaped fountain pens.

My fountain pen “contacts” have, sigh, dried up over the last few years, so I had to turn to The Fountain Pen Hospital, who have treated me well in the past, with their Bill Cosby-centric catalog and reasonable prices on inks. They had this sad, shocking news to report. I post it for you, so that you may bid reasonably on a new-in-box 600, and not cry yourself to sleep when you realize what has become of the fountain pen industry.

Hello,
The Rotring company no longer operates in the USA (possibly nowhere else
either). As we understand it, Newell-Rubbermaid, which owns Parker and
Waterman, acquired Rotring a few years ago and has been incorporating
parts of Rotring’s operations into Parker. The 600 was discontinued a
few years ago and I am not familiar with the 500.

Please let me know if we may assist you further.

Best regards,

Fountain Pen Hospital

So long Nokia N75

Nokia N75 at metaphor

Note: in the picture above, the gun is a symbol for bad cellphone technology.

I was too worried about the second generation iPhone being released to actually buy a first generation one myself. Luckily, my wife’s generosity does not suffer from such techno absurdity. It is now time to say goodbye to the Nokia N75, a phone that lasted from around May to January. I can’t say it’s been fun.

The iPhone line

Young and the iPhone

Prior to dining on Vietnamese sandwiches at lunch, we took a stroll past the Apple Store to see the line for the iPhone. By noon it had gone around the block which is respectable, but not mind-blowing. I wish I had gotten another sandwich though.
