Recently, a few colleagues of mine had a drink at Flora. (I apologize for the unnecessary links in that last sentence.) What was so revolutionary about that night was that the concept and execution of the square ice cube was put front and center into my life. My guru and mentor told me that the perfect ice cube I was enjoying was brought to us by Kold-Draft, a company that is able to produce, through advanced technologies, the perfect square, clear ice cube. Then the topic became (briefly. mostly between myself) whether the size of the cube was perfect or the way it was frozen.
Over the years, we have moved from standard ice cube trays to an automatic ice maker to novelty silicon trays shaped like hearts, teeth and molded to fit into water bottles. They were ok, but after you go square, you never go back. [Just ask my wife. (beat) **rimshot**] Then, I forgot about square ice cubes and went back to figuring out where I’m going to keep all my stuff now that we have 300 tiny, little girl outfits taking over our apartment.
Last Saturday, the sunbeam from heaven descended upon me at Whole Foods, when I came across this bad larry that our friends at Tovolo whipped up: “The Perfect Ice Cube Tray.” Their copywriter really nailed that emotional state of a consumer wanting the feel of a Kold Draft cube, but having the budgetary restrictions inherit to not being a restaurant or sleek bar.

There is absolutely no ambiguity in my mind: these are the best ice trays I’ve ever used. No weird chiropractic adjustments to pop them out and perfectly square frozen fun every time.
